Grubhub recently announced a pilot program with Joco, a dock-based e-bike rental platform in New York City, to equip 500 couriers with e-bikes.
Improving safety standards for electric vehicles has become a topic of concern following a series of electric vehicle battery fires in New York City, and the vehicles and batteries that accompany electric bicycle rental platforms are safer. Recently, the FDNY Foundation provided nearly $100,000 in grants specifically to strengthen user training on the safe operation of lithium-ion batteries. In addition, Grubhub is also actively running a battery recycling program to recycle those uncertified electric bicycles,
It is reported that the pilot of Grubhub and Joco will start in mid-June, covering 55 stations and 1,000 bicycles in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, New York City. Grubhub’s delivery drivers will also earn Joco points, which can be used to rent e-bikes.
Grubhub also plans to set up a matching Joco electric bicycle rental rest station for riders in downtown Manhattan, equipped with toilets, charging stations, lounges and more. Riders can also change vehicles or battery equipment at these stations.
Cohen said in an interview: “We want to help the delivery riders solve the rental problem of electric vehicles as much as possible, and ensure their safety while bringing convenience to riders, which is not easy in today’s environment.”
