Joyy entered the short-distance travel field, and launched shared electric scooters overseas

After the news in December 2023 that Joyy Group intended to layout in the short-distance travel field and was conducting internal testing of the electric scooter business, the new project was named “3KM”. Recently, it was reported that the company has officially named the electric scooter Ario and began to launch it in overseas markets in the second quarter of this year.

It is understood that the business model of Ario is no different from the current overseas shared electric scooters. A fixed fee is charged when users unlock it, and then a fee is charged based on the usage time. Relevant sources disclosed that the first launch city of Ario is Auckland, New Zealand. Currently, the number of deployments has exceeded 150, but the operation area has not covered the entire region and only the central and western parts. If users drive into restricted areas or leave the operation area, the scooter will intelligently slow down until it stops.

In addition, relevant sources showed that Li Xueling, the chairman of Joyy Group, attaches great importance to Ario. During the internal testing of related products, he called on employees to support within the company and also privately shared the project among friends and mentioned that it was something new he did.

It is understood that Ario has a full-charge cruising range of 55km, a maximum load capacity of 120kg, a maximum speed of 25km/h, supports IPX7 waterproof, has an anti-tipping function and additional sensors (which can detect improper parking, vandalism, and dangerous riding). In addition, it is worth noting that Ario also supports remote operation. If a user ignores the riding guide and parks Ario in the middle of the passage, this situation can be detected through the on-board sensor and alert the operation team. Then, the remote driving technology can be used to park Ario in a safer place within a few minutes.

In this regard, Adam Muirson, the head of Ario, said, “Sustainable transportation options, including shared electric scooters, are crucial for the livability of urban centers. The design innovation of Ario solves the deep-rooted problems in the industry and is crucial for pedestrians and riders in the region to enjoy a more convenient and safer urban environment.”

It is understood that as a short-distance transportation tool, shared electric scooters have previously been popular in many overseas regions, and well-known operators such as Bird, Neuron, and Lime have emerged one after another. According to relevant statistics, as of the end of 2023, there are shared electric scooter services in at least 100 cities worldwide. Before Ario entered the game in Auckland, there were already shared electric scooter operators such as Lime and Beam.

In addition, it should be noted that due to the problems of random parking and riding of shared electric scooters, and even causing accidents, cities such as Paris, France, and Gelsenkirchen, Germany have announced a complete ban on shared electric scooters in recent years. This also poses significant challenges for operators in applying for operation licenses and safety insurance.
