This year, the Transport for London said it would significantly increase the number of e-bikes in its bicycle rental scheme. Santander Cycles, launched in October 2022, has 500 e-bikes and currently has 600. The Transport for London said 1,400 e-bikes would be added to the network this summer and 2,000 could be rented in central London.
The Transport for London pointed out that registered users of the bicycle rental scheme will use shared e-bikes for 6.75 million trips in 2023 , but overall usage dropped from 11.5 million trips in 2022 to 8.06 million trips in 2023 , the lowest level in the past decade. The reason may be due to the higher cost per use.
Therefore, from March 3 , Transport for London will resume the daily rental fee. The current price of shared e-bikes is 3 pounds per day . Those who purchase daily rental e-bikes can provide unlimited 30- minute rides. If you rent for more than 30 minutes, you will be charged an additional £ 1.65 for each additional 30 minutes . If you subscribe on a monthly or annual basis, you will still be charged £ 1 for one hour of use . On a pay-per-use basis, riding an e-bike costs £ 3.30 per 30 minutes .
Day ticket prices rise to £ 3 per day , but subscription fees remain at £ 20 per month and £ 120 per year . Subscribers get unlimited 60- minute rides and pay an extra £ 1 to use the e-bikes. Monthly or annual customer subscriptions also come with a key fob that can be used to unlock the vehicle, making it more convenient than using a smartphone app.
Santander said it will continue to sponsor London’s flagship bike rental scheme until at least May 2025 .
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: ” We are delighted to have added 1,400 new e-bikes to our fleet, tripling the number available for hire . E-bikes have proven extremely popular since their introduction, helping to break down barriers to cycling for some. The new day ticket prices will also make Santander cycling one of the most affordable ways to get around the capital.
